Uganda Business and Investment Seminar [Tokyo]

UNIDO ITPO Tokyo and the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Japan hosted “Uganda Business and Investment Seminar” in Tokyo on Tuesday, 25 September. 

The seminar was held with great supports from the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Japan and Japanese companies and stakeholders in Uganda. Despite the bad weather, approximately 70 people from Japanese companies and organizations attended the seminar.

The seminar was opened by H.E. Mrs. Betty Grace Akech Okullo, Ambassador of the Republic of Uganda to Japan. She articulated that Uganda’s investment environment, including public security and stability of the country, has been improved and the country is ready to welcome Japanese investors. Ms. Hope Waira, Senior Investment Executive of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), then took the floor and described the country’s latest investment opportunities. She also introduced UIA as “a One Stop Center”‘ while explaining its supports regarding company registration and various investment procedures offered for foreign investors. The UNIDO’s advisor Mr. Tadesse Dadi Segni, who resides in Ethiopia and offers business supports to Japanese companies in Uganda, shared his experience and supports that would be useful for Japanese companies.

The latter half of the seminar was proceeded from Japan’s perspectives. Mr. Kentaro Takada, the former Coordinator for Economic Cooperation at the Embassy of Japan in Uganda, illustrated the overview of Uganda from business perspective and introduced some of the successful Japanese companies. He also introduced the support schemes offered by JICA and JETRO. FAR EAST Inc. is one of the successful companies in Uganda dealing with natural and organic products. The company’s CEO, Mr. Toshiyuki Sasaki, gave a presentation of Jali Organic Project describing how the company was able to produce and sell products that satisfied Japanese consumers, working closely with Ugandan producers after many twists and turns.

After the closing remarks by Mr. Yuko Yasunaga, Head of UNIDO ITPO Tokyo, the networking session was held. Presenters and participants had fruitful conversations over rich Ugandan coffee and FAR EAST’s delicious dry fruits prepared by the embassy.
