PARTNERING FOR ISID: New challenges and opportunities for the UNIDO-Japan cooperation(29 June to 2 July 2021)

From 29 June to 2 July 2021, UNIDO and the Permanent Mission of Japan to UNIDO will co-organize an online event titled ‘Partnering for ISID: New challenges and opportunities for the UNIDO-Japan cooperation’ to discuss new opportunities to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) during the difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will underline the role of UNIDO and the contribution of Japan to tackling ISID issues and will elaborate on how the UNIDO-Japan cooperation can help developing and emerging countries to advance ISID further and build back better.

Being primarily a global health crisis, the pandemic also presented far-reaching socioeconomic consequences. Worldwide, it has disrupted millions of people’s livelihoods, with disproportionate impact on the poor. The disruption of trade and economy in developing countries is jeopardizing the successful achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To address this current global challenge, there is a high demand for the international community to provide an agile and suitable response to the socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic worldwide, both in protecting the lives and livelihoods of the vulnerable, and in strengthening and greening industries to keep societies on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.

The UNIDO-Japan cooperation has been intensified since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It helps create inclusive and sustainable economies in developing and emerging countries that are more resilient when facing climate change; pandemics; inequalities, in particular faced by women and youth; and other global challenges.
