Event Report: Online Seminar on Sustainable Energy in Mozambique

UNIDO ITPO Tokyo organized an Online Seminar on Sustainable Energy in Mozambique on 22 February 2024. Mr. Nandio Durao, UNIDO ITPO Tokyo’s Advisor in Mozambique, served as a master of ceremonies. The event attracted 118 participants.

Mr. Jose Antonio Justino Nhalungo, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mozambique in Japan, in his opening remarks, gave an overview of bilateral relations between Japan and Mozambique and introduced Japanese assistance in the energy sector.

As a keynote speaker, Ms. Olga Utchavo, Director of the Renewable Energy Office of Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), national electricity generator and supplier in Mozambique, explained the national strategy of improving energy access and the energy transition, and introduced enormous potential of large hydro and renewable energy such as solar. She also presented power generation projects and invited the private sector to participate.

In a panel discussion moderated by Mr. Jaime Comiche, UNIDO representative in Mozambique, the National Energy Fund (FUNAE) illustrated off-grid and mini-grid power generation of the country, the Association for Renewable Energy (AMER) presented their activities to promote renewable energy, and the Industrial Association of Mozambique (AIMO) and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mozambique (CCIMJ) referred to the potentials and challenges in Mozambique’s sustainable energy sector from the business community’s perspective.

During the discussions, the importance of supplying competitive electricity to the manufacturing sector for industrialization and the need to establish legal framework for renewable energy were identified.

Many questions were raised from the audience and the seminar was concluded with closing remarks by Ms. Fumio Adachi, Head of UNIDO ITPO Tokyo.
