Event Report: EBRD/UNIDO Joint Event “Achieving Sustainable Growth through ESG (Environment, Society and Governance) Investment” ※ Online

UNIDO ITPO Tokyo co-organized an online event, “Achieving Sustainable Growth through ESG (Environment, Society and Governance) Investment,” with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on March 17, 2022.

In this event, Ms. Nobuko Ichikawa (Environment Department, EBRD HQs) and Ms. Nahomi Nishio (Environment Department, UNIDO HQs) gave presentations on the environmentally friendly initiatives of both institutions. Afterwards, in addition to these two speakers, Mr. Shin Oya (Director, EBRD Representative Office in Tokyo), Mr. Takashi Oya (Deputy Managing Director, Japan Cooperation Center for the Middle East or JCCME), and Mr. Yuko Yasunaga (Head, UNIDO ITPO Tokyo) discussed the concept of ESG measures that Europe is taking the lead in, and the realization of a circular economy.

Mr. Shin Oya cited the advantages of investment by the EBRD, such as its high responsiveness to sovereign risk and the speed of its financing, and stated that the EBRD is actively involved in private sector projects and has knowledge of various sectors. Mr. Yasunaga concluded, “UNIDO and EBRD can work in a mutually complementary manner. New business opportunities for renewable energy are about to emerge in Europe and North Africa. Let’s promote sustainable activities together with EBRD, JCCME and the Japanese private sector.”

This event was held in Japanese only and was attended by approximately 150 participants from Japanese companies interested to develop business in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and North Africa.
